The Techniques of Beginning and Finishing a Novel:
(note: writing exercises will not be conducted)
Class one:
setting the goal to begin and finish a novel; a writer's work area and schedule; the process of hand-writing versus typing a manuscript.
Class two:
how to put emotion on paper--the most important element of your story.
Class three:
revealing your "voice"; characterization (the four tags that change stick figures into "people").
Class four:
setting; dialogue; and pacing.
Class five:
the beginning of your story--how to start and end the beginning.
Class six:
the middle of your story--the construction of scenes and sequels.
Class seven:
Motivation and Reaction Units (MR units).
Class eight:
the ending of your story--proving your hero is heroic; punishing your villain; providing story satisfaction.
Class nine:
revision techniques; a basic grammar review.
Class ten:
approaching critique groups, agents, editors, publishers, film producers; self-publishing.
The evening sessions will focus on participants' outlines and first pages.
